The last three weeks, our household has been battling various ailments. First Henry had pinkeye, then I had laryngitis (teaching was tough!), then Jack had the stomach flu, and then, just this week, Henry had an ear infection. Needless to say, there were several fevers in our household, which in turn meant that our thermometer got a lot of use.
If you have kids, perhaps more specifically toddlers, you likely know the struggle of trying to take their temperature. When Jack was born, we received an Exergen Temporal Scanner thermometer as a shower gift. I have no complaints about this thermometer, it’s always worked fine for us. The evolving problem however is that my two year old is about as fearful of thermometer as he is eyedrops – whenever I get out the thermometer he starts screaming and thrashing around.
When I was out shopping this weekend, I randomly came across the InstaTemp Digital Thermometer. I had to do a double take, does that really do what I think it does? I instantly picked it up off the shelf and these are the instructions I saw on the back of the package:
At that point, I reached for my phone to see what reviews had to say. Overall, the reviews for the InstaTemp Non-Touch Thermometer were good. The main complaint on the reviews was that it is not possible to replace the batteries in the thermometer. When I read this, at first I was upset too. But then I found a direct response from InstaTemp to one of these reviews. The company said that although the batteries in the thermometer are not replaceable, the batteries should last 7,500 temperature recordings – which comes out to one temperature recording every day for 20 years! They also mentioned that the product comes with a 2 year warranty, which covers the device should the batteries die within the first two years.
So, I bought one. Here’s my thoughts so far.
Before you start reading the next paragraph, let me tell you that I recorded a video review at the bottom of the page. (A video has to be worth what, a hundred thousand words, right?)
I love this product. When I got home, I opened the package and the product was literally ready for use. It’s very easy: simply hold the thermometer approximately 1 inch from the forehead above the eyebrows and between the eyes. Push the button. The temperature recording is done as soon as you push the button. There is no beeping sound during the reading, which makes it really nice to use when your child is sleeping. Before I bought this thermometer, I would walk in to my son’s room and feel him with my hand to try to determine if he had a fever. I always worried that he would wake up when I touched him. With this thermometer, I simply point it at his forehead, push the button and look at the backlit LED screen. There also is a small light below the LED screen that turns red if the temperature is urgently too high or too low, yellow if it is borderline, and green if they are within the normal range.
This product is very easy to use and I LOVE it. I think every parent needs one of these, because I don’t think there is any easier way to get your child’s temperature!

I bought this awhile back & have used it here & there but I can’t decide if it’s accurate? Once one of my boys was sick & it wasn’t reading that he had a temp but he felt warm to me. Who knows. I definitely like that you don’t have to touch them & you don’t have to wait a super long time for the read to come out. Maybe next time they’re sick I’ll use this one & another kind to see if they both register the same. ????
Hi Ashley! From my experience with it (which is limited), we’ve found it works ok. To kind of “test” it (which was not a super scientific method), I took Micah’s temperature and then had him splash hot water on his forehead and retook it. It registered a much higher temperature the second time! You’ll have to let me know what you think of it after a few months!
